J.D. (Juris Doctor) LL.B
Darrin was born in Richmond Hill,
Ontario, north of Toronto and has been
practicing Family Law in
Ottawa for over 20 years. He moved
to Ottawa in 1985 where he attended

in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts
Highest Honours with a
Concentration in Criminology. He
attended Law School at Queen’s
University from 1990 to 1993.
Darrin articled at a large firm in
downtown Ottawa. After his call to
the Bar he worked for a small firm
Lyon and Rick. He opened his own
practice in October of 1999.
Darrin practices exclusively in the

Rachel is the senior legal
assistant and the office manager.
Rachel and Darrin were married in
1993. No, Darrin did not marry his
secretary. Rachel and Darrin were
dating for many years before either
decided they would make a career in
law. Rachel attended the Legal
Assistant Program at Algonquin
College. She graduated in 1989. She
has been working in the field every
since. She has been working with
Darrin since he opened his own
practice in 1999. She has over 25
years of experience.
There has been some discussion in
the profession lately about whether
paralegals should be permitted to
practice in the area of family law.
At present this is not permitted -
unless the paralegal is working
under the direction of a lawyer.
Rachel does a lot of
substantive work at the office.
She prepares the first draft of
a separation agreement, court
application and assists with
financial disclosure. This is a
real competitive advantage of
the firm as there are two people
that clients can talk to about
their file and Rachel’s services
are offered at a lower rate.
Jessica Montpellier is
completing her articling
requirements with Clayton Law
Office prior to being call to
the Bar as a practising lawyer
in Ontario. She is assisting
in all areas including
drafting, client meetings and
certain levels of court
appearances. She can be reached
at extension 215.
