Members of Clayton Law
Office
There are
three members of the firm.
Darrin Clayton
B.A. (HONS),
J.D. (Juris Doctor) LL.B
Darrin was born in Richmond Hill,
Ontario, north of Toronto and has been
practicing Family Law in
Ottawa for over 15 years. He moved
to Ottawa in 1985 where he attended
Carleton University. He graduated
in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts
Highest Honours with a
Concentration in Criminology. He
attended Law School at Queen’s
University from 1990 to 1993.
Darrin articled at a large firm in
downtown Ottawa. After his call to
the Bar he worked for a small firm
Lyon and Rick. He opened his own
practice in October of 1999.
Darrin practices exclusively in the
area of Family Law. He is a member
of the local law association - the
County of Carleton Law Association,
the Canadian Bar Association, the
Law Society of Upper Canada (body
that governs lawyers) and the
Collaborative Law Network (Ottawa
Collaborative Family Law
Association).
Rachel Clayton is the senior legal
assistant and the office manager.
Rachel and Darrin were married in
1993. No, Darrin did not marry his
secretary. Rachel and Darrin were
dating for many years before either
decided they would make a career in
law. Rachel attended the Legal
Assistant Program at Algonquin
College. She graduated in 1989. She
has been working in the field every
since. She has been working with
Darrin since he opened his own
practice in 1999. She has over 25
years of experience.
There has been some discussion in
the profession lately about whether
paralegals should be permitted to
practice in the area of family law.
At present this is not permitted -
unless the paralegal is working
under the direction of a lawyer.
Rachel does a lot of substantive
work at the office. She prepares
the first draft of a separation
agreement, court application and
assists with financial disclosure.
This is a real competitive
advantage of the firm as there are
two people that clients can talk to
about their file and Rachel’s
services are offered at a lower
rate.
Kristina Chapman is our
law clerk. She works very
closely with Rachel to organize
the large quantity of
documentation that flows through
the office. She is
available to assist in tracking
down information, determining
the status of court documents,
obtaining any information
required to keep your matter
moving along, or to simply act
as a point of contact for our
clients.
Diane McCoy is the administrative
assistant. She is the first point
of contact for clients often as she
answers the phones, deals with
correspondence, emails etc. Diane
has spent many years working with
the public.
